RECLAIMING WHOLENESS: One of my fundamental beliefs is that we are all multidimensional beings, built with the innate ability to heal, restore and regenerate physically, emotionally, mentally, socially and spiritually. My approach to healing is based on creating a strong therapeutic relationship as the foundation for identifying and building inner strength and resources, gently assisting you to recognize and release the blocks which disguise your real self and authenticity and serving as a catalyst for change and a support in times of challenge and stress. I focus on multidimensional, interactive, collaborative and educational interventions, blending traditional and emerging psychotherapy, counseling and life coaching modalities.

HEALING LIFE SKILLS: Learning and integrating new skills is key to making healthy lifestyle changes, enhancing your relationships ~ with yourself and others, and clearing and releasing inner and outer obstacles. In my role as nurse practitioner, therapist, counselor and coach, I will help you craft a plan and teach you the healing life skills you need to get and stay healthy on all levels – so that you can move forward and create change, success and fulfillment - for life.

BALANCING BRAIN CHEMISTRY: When brain chemistry is out of balance, life can really be a struggle - often despite working hard to achieve wellness and create changes that last. When imbalances in brain chemistry are limiting progress, then combining pharmaceuticals with coaching/psychotherapy, hypnosis and life skills training can be a very useful and effective approach to supporting you to achieve wellness in mind, body and spirit.

Most people have times in their life when a problem doesn't go away on its own, and they find it having a negative impact on their day-to-day life. Sometimes people turn to means of escaping or avoiding the problem, or sometimes the problem leads to a crisis. I believe that my mindfulness-based approach to counseling can help most people address and resolve their problems in life, hopefully before a crisis occurs.

As a result of my experience as counselor over the years, I have been inspired by the courage and dedication that my clients have demonstrated to confront their concerns and follow paths to make positive changes in their lives. It is my intention to use my experience, education, training and skills to help all clients find these paths toward improvement and decrease their suffering and cultivate feelings of being well.

I have been counseling since 2006. I am a Cognitive-Behavior (CBT) therapist with a special interest and expertise in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and substance-related concerns. I am also trained in dual diagnosis, trauma-informed care, Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET) and Collaborative Problem Solving (CPSM). I strive to help people meet their goals by examining the connection between how they think, feel (emotionally and physically), behave, and interact with their surroundings; and by teaching the skills of mindfulness, cognitive restructuring, emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness. I provide individual counseling with adults ages 18 and up, and provide couples counseling as well. I am happy to provide a free phone consultation to see if my counseling strategies would be a good fit for any interested potential client. Please visit my website to obtain more information about beginning counseling with me and learn more about my background and qualifications.

Should we decide to move forward with counseling, our therapy together begins with a thorough assessment, including your reasons for seeking counseling and relevant history. During this process (which may take a few sessions), we will begin to develop our therapy relationship and discuss treatment options. We will work together to identify your strengths, define your struggles, and establish your goals. We will utilize proven therapies (e.g. CBT, DBT, MET) to treat your unique situation. In my experience, mindfulness skills and meditation practice or focused concentration skills facilitate therapy and are essential to recovering, discovering, and uncovering your optimal you. Thank you for reading and I wish you well. Keith

First Responders, Veterans, PTSD, Career Counseling, Anxiety, Depression, Grief/Loss, Survivors of Criminal Activity, Living with Chronic Pain, Adults, and Teens

Everyone's life journey has mountains, valleys, creeks, and oceans to traverse and sometimes it can be overwhelming! We all experience the complete gamut of emotions and challenges in our travels. While no two people's life journey is exactly the same, there are people who can help you along the way through understanding, caring empathy, and educated guidance.

For the last 30 years, I have been serving the public in many different roles which has now brought me to counseling. My experiences have been working with survivors of criminal acts, First Responders, soldiers, and the people of Iraq. For the last 12 years I have been working with teenagers, families, individuals, and couples who are working hard to repair or improve their relationships.

My counseling style is based on Reality Therapy supported by Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Narrative Therapy, and other modalities. There is no one tool for every job, your treatment plan will be unique to your story. I am not a counselor who just sits and nods . . . we will be working together.

As your counselor I am here to help you follow or change your path, to make it the most direct, and smooth course it can be. Each time we pick up our foot, extend it in front of us, and then put it down again is one more step to moving "ever forward."

I offer a rate of $40 per 50-minute session, I will do an initial consultation with you, to see if I'm a good fit, this may be done either by phone or in-person. If you have a financial challenge, please still give me a call, and we can discuss possibilities.

Our problems occur when there is a discrepancy between what we want and what we are experiencing. As adults, we struggle with the leftover impact of abuse, neglect or abandonment during childhood. These childhood experiences can harm our sense of well-being and belonging as adults. I believe that given the opportunity we all have the ability to move through these setbacks, reaffirm our commitment to our life goals and find inner peace.

As a board certified, licensed professional counselor, I've enjoyed serving every age group -- children and parents, youth, adults, couples, and families. I practice therapy from a person-centered philosophy. I believe that you are the expert on your personal situation and have the means to resolve your problems within a safe therapeutic relationship.

To quote Twohig, M. (2004) ~

"It's like you're in the process of climbing up a big mountain that has lots of dangerous places on it. My job is to watch out for you and shout out directions if I can see places you might slip or hurt yourself. But I'm not able to do this because I'm standing at the top of your mountain, looking down at you. If I'm able to help you climb your mountain, it's because I'm on my own mountain, just across a valley. I don't have to know anything about exactly what it feels like to climb your mountain to see where you are about to step, and what might be a better path for you to take."

My special areas of interest are relationships, intimacy, attachment, anxiety, and depression (especially related to pregnancy and birth). I have extensive training working with parents who desire to increase their bonds with little as young as 2 years old.

You deserve space in your day to carve out time to tell your story. I'm pleased to help you unravel these negative experiences to allow room for joy and purpose in your life. I am here to help - and more than willing to listen.

I invite you to reach out for a free 20-minute consultation. You can reach me at 503-395-4648 or send an email to me at: stephenie.szumny@gmail.com

We are born with the capacity to thrive and be resilient. Often, we learn to compromise our potential and brilliance in order to survive the impact of our early environments. These early coping strategies, though needed, can become outdated and limit us in adulthood. Therapy can re-awaken the forgotten and marginalized pieces of ourselves so we can have more tools with which to navigate our complex and rapidly changing world.

I offer in-depth, holistic therapy that considers your bodily experience as essential to the healing process. For example, when your hearts start racing, or you feel a knot in your stomach, your body is telling us something important about your experience. As you get a deeper felt sense of your experience, you may find you are able to make more informed, intentional choices, rather than reacting habitually.

I focus on supporting people who have experienced marginalization, including queer, trans, non-binary, bi-cultural and immigrant populations and also those who are looking for an alternative to talk therapy. I specialize in working with anxiety, depression, and trauma symptoms from a body inclusive lens, integrating somatic, social justice, and attachment oriented perspectives.

Fees: I strive to make therapy accessible to a wide range of income levels and will work with you to find a sustainable fee. Please inquire about my sliding scale options. If I am unable to accommodate your needs, I will provide you with other resources and referrals.

The best way to find out if we are the right fit is to contact me. I offer a free consultation and would be happy to answer questions and further discuss how I might be able to support you.

Finding the right therapist is one of the most important steps in taking care of your mental and emotional well-being. For queer, trans, and non-binary folks, it is especially important to find a therapist who understands your unique, embodied experience in the world.

Often, even when our mind has moved forward, our bodies hold onto patterns and wounds that no longer serve us. For queer, trans, and non-binary folks, the experiences of marginalization, oppression and trauma has particular impact on the body, as well as our social, emotional, and intellectual experience. Yet, our body also inherently holds the key to release stuck patterns, let go of damaging beliefs, and ultimately expand our capacity to grow, change, and experience more joy and pleasure in our lives.

Using an integrative and somatic approach, I work with you as a whole person, providing a safe and dynamic space to explore the issues and beliefs that may underlie the challenges in your life, while incorporating your experience in the moment on a physical, emotional, and energetic level. I also hold a social justice and strengths based perspective. We are all impacted by our unique personal experiences as well as societal systems of privilege and oppression. In our work together, we will address structural and systemic inequities, and attend to your experience navigating these intersectional realms.

I work with adults, couples, adolescents, youth and families. To find out if we are a good fit, I encourage you to reach out and schedule a free initial in person or phone consultation. I look forward to hearing from you.
