Life can sometimes be unpredictable and challenging and many people find themselves stuck in behavior patterns, distressing emotions, or unsatisfying relationships. You may find that you need some guidance to navigate these times in your life. A supportive therapeutic environment can help you find solutions to the challenges you face.
My approach is practical, straightforward, and collaborative with the goal of expanding self-awareness, goal setting and gaining insights into patterns that might be causing difficulty in your life and in your relationships. While emotional pain brings you into therapy, it is your strengths that are an integral part of the therapy process. Each therapy is unique in detail and in duration and I have found the most success comes from using different methods from a variety of theoretical approaches.
One of the best predictors of successful therapy is the relationship between client and therapist. I offer a free 30 minute consultation to allow us to get to know each other and to ensure that we are a good fit. Thereafter my fee is $40 per session.
Please call me at 503-314-9198 or email me at amber_cottrell@hotmail.com for an appointment. I look forward to working with you.

It's great when life is smooth sailing, with the wind at your back and you're cruising along. But every now and then the wind comes up, the water gets choppy and the waves can be downright scary. You try to ride out the storm and hope it passes quickly, but sometimes you end up just depressed, anxious and stuck. That's when having another steady hand on the wheel can be so helpful. At times like these, finding the right counselor can really be valuable. I offer a caring and supportive environment to help you better understand the challenges you face. Together we can find creative, practical solutions.
My approach to counseling and therapy is straightforward. I'm focused on how to help you feel better and live your life in a more satisfying way. I work from an Existential-Humanistic perspective. The beauty and power of this approach lies in the integration of who you are, the larger context of your life in relation to the reasons you've come to therapy. In working through the challenges that brought you to therapy, you will gain a deeper sense of self, more authentic presence in the world, and greater recognition of opportunities for change.
Therapy is of great benefit for those who are working through difficult issues as well as anyone who is engaged in self-exploration and personal growth. The therapy process opens the door to new perceptions, and opportunities to understand and pursue those things in life that are truly important and meaningful to you. In turn, this promotes a life filled with courage, kindness, deep satisfaction, and joy.
Particular issues that I focus on include:
~ Life Transitions / Personal Growth
~ Anxiety / Depression /Panic
~ Trauma / Grief
~ Relationship / Codependency
~ Problem Gambling
Since finding the right therapist is important, I offer a free consultation so you and I can have a chance to meet and determine if we are a good fit. I invite you to contact me and take the first step to feeling better.

Therapy for a Better Life
Are you looking for balance in your life? Are you having a difficult time with your child or partner? Do you feel stuck?
Sometimes a counselor can help you find your way. I am a marriage and family therapist who can help you get back into your groove.
Everyone has strengths, but we occasionally fall into patterns that prevent us from seeing solutions to life's pressures. You may have used strategies that worked in past relationships but no longer serve you. I can help you discover what's working and what's not. You can feel better.
Areas of Specialization:
~ Marriage and relationship conflicts
~ Pre-marital counseling
~ Grief and loss
~ Life transitions
~ Postpartum issues
~ Parenting issues and challenges
~ Effects of alcoholism on the family, including adult children of alcoholics
~ Family of origin issues
~ Communication difficulties
~ Stress management and coping skills
~ Relaxation techniques for improved health and well being
I believe that all people strive toward health but past interactions can impede progress. I work to uncover core motivations and look at the influence of client's relationships. While I come from a family systems perspective, I am client oriented, which means that you're in control. It is important that we address what is of most concern to you in each session. I often ask my clients "How is your approach working in your life?" I ask the same question regarding therapy. "Are you satisfied with the work we're doing? How do you feel about our relationship?" Research shows that 87% of change can be attributed to the alliance between client and therapist. For this reason it is imperative we work together in therapy.
My practice consists of working with couples, families and individuals who want to make change in their lives. As your therapist, I help clarify problems, identify needs and provide direction toward solutions that will improve your quality of life.
I customarily charge $60 dollars for a fifty minute session, and have a very flexible sliding scale. Give me a call to schedule a free 30 minute consultation.

Hypnotherapy and Stress Management
I believe that people have the power to achieve great things. In fact I know this. I also know that life has its moments when we get overwhelmed. These are times when we need support, creative ideas and someone to listen. While stress management can make our lives more satisfying and peaceful, Hypnosis can create a powerful state to support focus, creativity, change and well being. My role is to help you connect with your own innate wisdom. As issues unfold, organic solutions begin to emerge. I hold the space for change while gently encouraging you to stretch, and explore. What it is that you really want? I encourage you dream big. Working together, we can discover resources for change.
I began my studies in hypnotherapy while working at the Mental Health Center, in Boulder Colorado. I had the good fortune to study with John G. Watkins PhD, a psychologist known for his work in clinical hypnosis, particularly Ego State Therapy. I was then introduced to the work of Dr. Milton Erickson. While living in Boulder, I studied with other mental health professionals, practiced hypnotherapy and taught classes on Self Hypnosis. My studies in Portland have been with Apositiva Hypnotherapy/NLP; Inner Active Communications, Beverly Martin NLP, and Kona University Hypnotherapy. I am a member of and Board Certified by the National Guild of Hypnosis. Though I work with people of all ages, I love working with children and have specialized training and separate Certification in Pediatric hypnosis. I am currently an MA student studying Process Oriented Psychology.
My years as a mental health worker, my studies in Philosophy, Metaphysics and Psychology, along with my training in Hypnotherapy, NLP and HeartMath® have given me a solid basis for working with clients. However, equally important is awareness, compassion, generosity of spirit and deep concern for my clients well being. I am honored to assist you with change work and gently hold the trust and responsibility that you place in my hands .

Throughout life we all face challenges. Sometimes we need help adapting to these challenges so that we may integrate them into our lives in a healthy way. What motivates any of us to ask for help?
I think we reach out when the distress we feel is greater than continuing to ignore the challenges in our lives. These challenges can be from internal or external sources.
It's okay to ask for help ~ in fact it is a sign of strength, and a step towards better health.
I have experience in treating depression, anxiety, situational stressors, sexual abuse and domestic violence victims, support for life-threatening health conditions and other life challenges. I also have experience helping clients deal with "co-occurring disorders" of chemical or behavioral addictions as well as symptoms of depression, anxiety, or other mental health disorder.
My initial consultation session is offered without fee. My standard fee is $80 for a 50 minute session, I may be able to accept your insurance benefits, so please do ask if you have questions. I also offer a sliding fee scale for uninsured clients or those suffering significant financial strain in their lives.

Positive change is the purpose of the therapeutic process. I believe that therapy is most effective when it encompasses the support and strength of not only an
empathic therapist, but also family and loved ones. Additionally, I believe we all
have the ability to change our lives regardless of past and present circumstances.
Individuals bring into their relationships rich histories that sometimes challenge
their ability to communicate with loved ones. My goal is to aid couples and families
identify these patterns and learn to replace them with communication skills that
will restore harmony to their relationships.
Additionally, I have a passion for
working with families who are transitioning through the painful process of divorce.
The dissolution of a marriage can be devastating to all family members involved.
If there are children in the family, the parents have a tremendous responsibility to
manage financial challenges, new homes, routines, schools etc. Often times during
the process of divorce, a child’s emotional needs are overshadowed by the new
family dynamic, resulting in behavioral and academic struggles. It is my goal to help
parents weather the storm of divorce while maintaining healthy communication and
boundaries with their children.
My standard rate is $80 for 50 minutes, but I also offer a sliding scale for those with
financial hardship. I currently have availability on Tuesdays.
I know firsthand that beginning therapy can be intimidating, so please feel
free to contact me with any questions at 503-341-0611, or email me at:
